On the 27th of January 2016, the seventh generation of Pokémon games were announced and judging from the Pokémon Twitter page history could be repeating itself.
The 27th of January is a special date in the Pokémon calendar, because it is the official ‘Pokémon Day’ and usually comes with a celebration, especially its 20th back in 2016 which saw Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon being revealed for the first time. Starting on the 21st of February, the official Twitter page for the company posted a GIF and statement telling followers to ‘visit Kanto’ (the first Pokémon region) and since then has proceeded to post the next generation area everyday. The next generation will be Pokémon’s 8th and the day for it will fall on the 27th and has got fans very excited.
With it being three years since the last announcement it seems like an appropriate time to announce the new set of games as that is the common time span for most Pokémon reveals. Since the Fire Red and Leaf Green remakes, in between generations there have been remakes or third titles in series’ announced. Between generation seven and generation 8 we had last year’s generation one remakes Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee.
The real question now is if generation eight is announced, will it be on the Nintendo 3DS handheld system like previous titles have been, or is the 3DS truly dead in the water and Nintendo is moving forward with the Nintendo Switch as its one and only console? The last couple and any future releases for the 3DS appear to be remakes and remasters of previous titles such as the upcoming Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn. Perhaps it is time to say goodbye to that era of Nintendo gaming and push forward with the higher quality model.
Even speculating a new set of games creates more questions seeing as the last set changed a lot of details of how Pokémon games worked. We didn’t have gym badges and the progress of the game was split up into four islands due to the game being based off of Hawaii. It looks like the trend of future games could be based off of different countries instead of Japan with generation six’s Kalos region being based off of France.
There’s plenty of interesting and different places a Pokémon game could be based off of with rich histories and folklore that tend to play an important role in storylines and design. I’d love to see a Pokémon region based off of Great Britain, Greece or Egypt but I guess anything is possible.
It could be the tinfoil hat speaking, but everything seems to be falling into place for the 27th of February and the prospect of new Pokémon games! If we’ve had the ‘sun’ and the ‘moon’ who knows what we’ll have next, space? Royalty? Life? Death? ABC? 123? You never know with Pokémon and that’s what makes these announcements so exciting.
Stay tuned for any Pokémon announcements and take a look below at the first tweet hinting at a new game:
