Netflix have officially cancelled The Punisher and Jessica Jones bringing a complete end to their six running Marvel series’ which also included Daredevil, The Defenders, Iron Fist and Luke Cage.
The Punisher’s Jon Bernthal, who plays the title star, was seen expressing his gratitude to the fans on Twitter for letting him have the experience of playing the character which quickly started rumours of the show’s cancellation.
The second season of The Punisher was recently added to Netflix and the company have announced the third upcoming season of Jessica Jones will be its final season.
It has been a slow but persistent process with Netflix removing each show since October, even after Daredevil’s third season being considered on of the series’ best. Due to this fact it is unsurprising that these cancellations have been announced.
The cancellations started to come about after Disney, who are the owners of Marvel and its properties, announced they would be starting up their own streaming service ‘Disney+’. However, it is debatable with the age rating of these shows in comparison to other Disney licences that they would be suitable.
It has been rumoured that Hulu could save the shows, but there has been no direct confirmation so far.
Marvel TV executive, Jeph Loeb, issued out a letter to fans highlighting the success of the shows as well as the situation they were in.
“On behalf of everyone at Marvel Television, we couldn’t be more proud or more grateful to our audience.
“Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters… but you know Marvel better than that.
“As Matthew Murdock’s Dad once said, “The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it’s how he gets back up.”
Hopefully this won’t be the end of these great Marvel series’ and in the future their stories will be told once more! The last scene in Daredevil Season 3 was too good not to continue!
